Additionally, the semen would not survive long enough to impregnate a woman anyway.

Do not travel to Iraq due to terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflict.
U.S. citizens in Iraq are at high risk for violence and kidnapping. Numerous terrorist and insurgent groups are active in Iraq and regularly attack both Iraqi security forces and civilians. Anti-U.S. sectarian militias may also threaten U.S. citizens and Western companies throughout Iraq. Attacks by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) occur in many areas of the country, including Baghdad.
[cut]
U.S. citizens should not travel through Iraq to Syria to engage in armed conflict, where they would face extreme personal risks (kidnapping, injury, or death) and legal risks (arrest, fines, and expulsion). The Kurdistan Regional Government stated that it will impose prison sentences of up to ten years on individuals who illegally cross the border. Additionally, fighting on behalf of, or supporting designated terrorist organizations, is a crime that can result in penalties, including prison time and large fines in the United States.

Dirigisme/corporatism is the doctrine that capitalism must be yoked to the needs of society/the state. It has a specific 19th century Catholic history to it, and that is why it was heavily associated with Catholic majority countries in the early and mid 20th Century. It also is a specific refutation of the nonsense that Nazis/fascists are socialists.
No.

A friend of my daughter who teaches at Texas Tech had a student who blamed the Spanish-American War on “communist aggression.”
The twist is that we were the commies.
His reasoning (if we may call it that) was that the Cuban rebels were, of course, socialists resisting the God-ordained authority of the Spanish monarchy. Like all media overlords, Pulitzer and Hearst were also closet socialists as was Teddy Roosevelt. TR demonstrated this later when he became the first president to “interfere with business,” (with the Pure Food and Drug Act and his anti-trust activities.) When the time was right these conspirators arranged for the liberal agitator John “Black Jack” Pershing (known for his affinity for people of color) to dynamite the Maine in Havana, thereby inciting another war to advance the red flag of communism, which it eventually did.

Rhe answer is clear. The Democrats must win both the Presidency and at least 50 seats in the Senate. They must then abolish the filibuster. Then they must grant statehood to DC and PR, and immediately seat 4 new Senators. Then they need to add at least 3 new SCOTUS Justices.

We’re well into a constitutional crisis, and the GOP in the Senate are more than willing to play dead for Trump so that the GOP can continue to pack the courts with their awful picks, Trump can sabotage functioning government, and Barr can rewrite the law by diktat so that the Constitution, the checks and balances, and oversight are meaningless.
Meanwhile, had any Democrat even so much considered a fraction of what Trump is doing, the GOP would be so far into impeachment that they’d already be at the Senate trial and voting on removal from office as I type.
Trump’s criminal conduct is breathtaking. Trump’s legal arguments claiming the right to engage in that criminal conduct without oversight/investigation by a co-equal branch, is even more stunning (and entirely predictable given that Barr’s history was all about expanding the role of the Executive and turning the Congress into a rubber stamp).

White House lawyers say it’s improper for Congress to investigate the president’s conduct when the Justice Department has already investigated him
- there is no double jeopardy to ‘investigation’
- until congress gets the entire report and supporting dox, it has no way to evaluate the investigation
- there is no prohibition about extending an investigation into areas/conduct it didnt cover (by choice or by scope limitations of the original order)
- p.s. - yesterday they said in court that congress virtually couldnt investigate the president for ‘criminal wrongdoing’ at all
- finally, white house lawyers are not the arbiter of what congressional power is (and limits are)
So the Los Angeles DA had me served with a subpoena. I have rejected the legally binding demand for information because my opinion is that it is not a legitimate request. Just kidding who do I think I am… The President?

Fuck fines. Drag them away in cuffs.
Fort Worth seminary removes stained-glass honoring conservative Southern Baptist leaders
Stained-glass windows memorializing religious leaders who helped shift the Southern Baptist Convention to a more conservative stance were unveiled with great fanfare several years ago at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Last month, those colorful images depicting religious leaders ranging from televangelist Jerry Falwell to former Seminary President Paige Patterson quietly came down.
This came nearly a year after Patterson, one of the leaders of the so-called “conservative resurgence,” was fired for how he handled sexual assault allegations.
Two of those windows depicting Falwell and Jerry Vines, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, were displayed last week at a graduation ceremony for Liberty University, a private Christian university Falwell founded in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Falwell’s son, Jerry Falwell Jr., criticized the Fort Worth seminary’s decision to remove the windows from the MacGorman Chapel, saying the windows have now been “removed by the new regime,” according to the Baptist News Global. “Unfortunately, a new generation has taken the convention away from those values in many ways.”
Somebody there actually opened a Bible and found the part about idolatry.
“Where this argument leaves us: The Justice Department says it can’t charge a sitting president lest it interfere with his constitutional powers. . And the White House says Congress can’t investigate him because it doesn’t have the power to conduct ‘law enforcement’ inquiries.”
So Trump just made himself bulletproof and we’re totally fucked now?

I don’t see this is an effective penalty.

Sounds like they’re taking in a lot of money if they can waste it on optional stained glass portraits.
The chapel they are part of cost $16 million a few years ago. There are 69 windows but I don’t know how many contained portraits.
Stained-glass windows honor leaders of Fort Worth seminary
Religious activist Frederick Clarkson denounced the display in uncompromising terms:
Portraits of Vanity in Stained Glass (December 29, 2013)
The chapel at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is in the process of becoming a spectacle of nepotism, cronyism and ostentatious self-importance. This is the 12 year project of the wife of one of the leaders of the conservative take-over of the Southern Baptist Convention. It is her “dream” to memorialize dozens of SBC conservative faction leaders in stained glass in the chapel Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary. Dorothy Patterson, wife of current seminary President and erstwhile conservative insurgent, Paige Patterson, was recently featured in a front page story about her project in the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.
Next year, the Pattersons will be among the first to be immortalized in a stained glass window together.
Clarkson has been exposing the religious right since the 70s and was the first to document the connection between fundy churches and armed militias (5 years before Oklahoma City).

What we (unfortunately) have is a large percentage of voters who want to believe that if you just remove Trump, things will go “back to normal.” And that’s what the DNC leadership is trying to sell them on in this election, that if people who hate Trump just sweat it out for another 18 months, then Trump will be gone and we can return to “normal.”
We aren’t going to return to normal. We shouldn’t return to normal. But we must return to a civic process that lets us continue the search for “better than normal”.

As much as Bolton loves war, my guess is that Trump will do whatever his handler tells him. The question is: does Putin want us to ignite a war in the Middle East? Trump likes bombing things but he doesn’t seem to have an appetite for a real conflict where American forces may actually die.

The reality is that a “win” is something we never seem to achieve, but simultaneously are “abandoning” if we should choose to withdraw our troops to end combat operations.

Exactly the line I’ve used on people who said we should have won Vietnam. They never can define what a “win” would have been. So, never get into a war where you can’t define what winning is, but you CAN define what losing is.

I’m starting to think that the only thing in the minds of the folks pushing us toward war with Iran is a need to push Iran’s face in the dirt for embarrassing in 1980. No thought of what comes after, just the need to strike back at someone who made us feel weak. Everything else is all rationalization around that core need.
re: #192 Targetpractice
And then what, Tom? We “win,” and then what? Unless we’re committed to yet another prolonged occupation, all we’ve really done is killed a lot of people, blown up a lot of buildings, and snuffed out any hope for a pro-West movement one day taking power. You will have killed any hope of a liberalization of Iran for a generation, if not longer.

They did not FEEL or THINK that it was a massive tragedy in which 4,000 “babies” died.
Because they KNOW that an embryo has great worth as a potential person, but that it is not yet a person.

While lying to herself that it won’t ever apply to her or those closest to her because she has the means to just bypass it, either through a private physician or private transport to a place more liberal. And even if it does, well there’ll be some organization or another that will sue to overturn the law, ensuring an injunction while the law has time to worm its way to the SCOTUS bench.

“Alabama illustrated that illegal immigrants will respond to changed incentives,” Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies and a backer of HB 56, told msnbc. “But states can’t follow through on those changes if the federal government is actively fighting them.”
I particularly enjoyed the shift of “federal government enforcing the constitution and the law” to “the federal government actively fighting them”. More proof that right-whingers want to live in an autocracy.

I’ve contributed to 4 of the candidates. I have a favorite but I am not going to identify that person publicly until things shake out more. At this point, I would vote for ANY Democrat, including Gabbard, Bernie, and the woo-woo lady, over Trump. I just hope it doesn’t come to that choice. Gabbard vs. Trump would be interesting. In 2013 Zedushka and I drove down to Huntsville to visit our son who was living there at the time.
We followed the directions given by the Garmin, which took us off the Interstate just above the Tennessee line and guided us down some roads that became increasingly backwoodsy (no offense to Sleuth, here!), with the stereotypical cars on blocks, washing machines in the overgrown yards. And yet the Garmin said the destination was 8 minutes ahead… 7 minutes… 6 minutes…
And suddenly there we were in a nicely landscaped subdivision of McMansions!
Five to ten in Huntsville ain’t no good time boys…
I love the album that this is from. It’s soooo good.

Worse. We are officially a MONARCHY and the rule of law theoretically continues to hold sway over all who don’t show–not even just SWEAR–fealty to the king. Under anarchy we’d not have prison to look forward to for that.

re: #275 The Vicious Babushka
The Israeli system allows a bazillion different political parties to participate and the party that wins a plurality, even if it is 23%, gets first chance to form a coalition with as many of the other parties as it takes to form a majority in the Knesset.
Gotcha. It’s too bad the opposition wasn’t pragmatic enough to rally around one party/person.

That reminds me. Space X has a launch scheduled for tonight.
SpaceX is targeting Wednesday, May 15 for the launch of 60 Starlink satellites from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. SpaceX’s Starlink is a next-generation satellite network capable of connecting the globe, especially reaching those who are not yet connected, with reliable and affordable broadband internet services.

- naturally fertilized eggs are god’s will and so they count
- artificially fertilized eggs dont (at least not yet)conversely
- natural miscarriages are (generally) god’s will
- any artificial means is not - (apparently god’s power does not extend to the decision or the process here)
I call “natural miscarriages” God’s miscarriages. Either that or “in His image” includes a reproductive system that aborts more than half of “babies.” Which, I guess, could be why there is only one God. 🤔
Monetarily supported maybe, but I don’t want anyone Talibangelical enough to sign that bill, given the responsibility for anyone’s intellectual or moral development!

This is a first for me. It is right side up.
The only reason it’s not suitable for work is that I work with a lot of conservatives.

We’re paranoid that anything other than active pro-Netanyahu Zionism, thanks to two outspoken women who may well privately support a one-state solution that must be called Palestine, will be ‘called out’ as antiSemitism now. NVM that the only Zionist Rs are the ones who believe that every Jew is an Israeli and that a good 80% of them believe that joint Israeli/American citizenship should be forbidden.

This is really more about Omar and Tlaib than Israel.
These latest abortion laws will lead to higher maternal mortality rates, but Republicans don’t care about women’s health.https://t.co/0K144JIva1

Many corporations have a hard rule that certain key people on an air flight are not on the same flight - looks to me that was incredibly violated here. At a place where I used to work they lost so many employees on the same flight that crashed, they instituted this rule.
If Coca-Cola makes sure that the 2-3 people who know the formula are not on the same flight, then what the hell is this?

Oh, no question. The only question now is whether they want “1910 with smartphones”—even 1950 is too recent socially-speaking—or if they’re after 1850. And I’m beginning to think they’d prefer the computers and smartphones gone from all but upper-class households too.

We need to stop pretending this is contradictory. Some of the most antisemitic leaders support Israel bc it immunizes them against the charge, bc of shared Islamophobia, and bc Zionism promises to fulfill their vision of making their country free of Jews.https://t.co/0H0QBkFjVw pic.twitter.com/zjyCZvTs3q
